The Aspire Program
Welcome to the Aspire Program

The Aspire Program is a seven-week program designed for secondary school girls who may be disengaged from learning. Designed for small group presentation, the program is best suited to girls in Years 9 and 10. They may come from dysfunctional families, have experienced hardship or may be having difficulties in establishing positive relationships. The program, however, would benefit all female students in coming to a better understanding of self. Research tells us that while both girls and boys have aspirations from an early age, girls are less likely to achieve them than boys. They are more likely to perceive other people’s negative attitudes, lack opportunities to gain experiences, and see peer pressure, mental wellbeing and gender inequities as barriers.
The aim of the Aspire Program is to educate, empower and enable the participants who engage with the program. The program aims to equip participants involved with support, life skills and strategies to carry with them into the future.
The program has three components over seven sessions:
Understanding Me – mindfulness, self worth and body image
Myself and Others – healthy relationships
My Future Self – goal setting, career planning

Program Development
In 2020, Soroptimist International Brisbane Water partnered with third year social work students at the University of Newcastle, Ourimbah Campus, under the tutelage of Associate Professor Wendy Foote, to design the seven-week ASPIRE PROGRAM. In partnership with YFC CarE, a more practical version of the program was developed with funding from the Office for Regional Youth to pilot the program at Wadalba Community School. The pilot was extremely successful in its first term and Student Support Officers were provided with information about the program in September 2022. The first programs ran in nine Central Coast schools in Term 4, 2022 with 12 schools running the program in 2023. The program undergoes regular updates based on feedback from facilitators and the latest research.
